The North Minneapolis
Southeast Asian Initiative (NMSEAI) works closely with neighborhood agencies,
primarily Jordan Area Community Council, Cleveland Neighborhood Association, and
Hawthorne Area Community Council. Concerned about the minimal involvement from
Southeast Asian members, these community agencies joined forces in 2001 as an
effort to reach out to the increasing Southeast Asian residents in North
Minneapolis
.
NMSEAI has worked with mostly Hmong residents by drawing them together with
their non-Hmong speaking neighbors and teaching them how to be active
participants both in their neighborhoods and in American life. The implications
for the Hmong and the
North Minneapolis
community are significant. For the first time, Hmong residents in
North Minneapolis
are using their collective "voice" to influence their neighborhood,
city, and state officials.
A large ongoing project that NMSEAI has been working on is the Minneapolis
Emergency Language Interpretation Card. This card is available to Hmong-speaking
community members and serves as a resource for them when they come into contact
with the Minneapolis Police.
